At a routine press briefing held by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) in February, spokesperson Pei Xiaofei announced that the Ministry, in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics and the National Energy Administration, has issued the "Announcement on the Release of the 2023 Power Carbon Footprint Factor Data." This marks the first time China has released domestic data on the carbon footprint of its power sector, which will be used to calculate the carbon footprints associated with power production and consumption across various industries.
The carbon footprint factor is a key building block for China’s product carbon footprint management system. As a fundamental energy metric, the power carbon footprint factor is essential for calculating the carbon footprint of products across various supply chains. Until now, international databases used default values for China’s power carbon footprint that were both outdated and overly high, failing to account for the green and low-carbon advances made through China’s energy transition. The newly released data, tailored to China’s specific energy profile, not only fills a significant data gap but also addresses the urgent needs of businesses. It strengthens China’s carbon footprint management framework and aligns its data with international standards, providing a solid foundation for future carbon footprint assessments.
Looking ahead, the MEE plans to collaborate with relevant agencies to further research power carbon footprint factors, expand the scope of calculations, and enrich the range of case samples. The Ministry will continue to refine and update the data annually, improving its quality and representativeness. Additionally, efforts will be made to strengthen international cooperation and work toward mutual recognition of power carbon footprint data globally.
