There are two main processes of investment casting water glass process & silica sol process. The water glass process is suitable for large parts of carbon steel, alloy steel, ductile iron & grey iron.

 

Advantages of investment casting

1. Complex shapes which are difficult by any other method are possible;

2. Very close tolerances and excellence surface finish can be obtained;

3. Ready for use with little or no machining required;

4. Almost any metal can be cast;

5. No parting lines

6. Capable of large shape so that lower cost

 

Disadvantages of investment casting

1. Time consuming process

2. Expensive labor cost

3. Limited casting size

4. Occasional defects
