Geosynthetic bentonite mat (GCL) is a composite material made by sandwiching bentonite powder (or other low-permeability materials) between two layers of geosynthetic materials and made by needling, bonding or sewing. It consists of three layers , the upper and lower layers are geotextiles, which mainly play a role in protection and reinforcement, so that they have a certain overall puncture resistance and tensile strength; the middle is a sodium bentonite particle layer, which is processed from natural clay mineral materials. It has high expansion and high water absorption capacity, low water permeability when wet, and mainly plays the role of anti-seepage and protective geomembrane.

 

Characteristics of bentonite waterproof blanket

1. Compactness: Sodium bentonite forms a high-density diaphragm under water pressure. When the thickness is about 3mm, its water permeability is α × 10-11m/sec or less, which is equivalent to 100 times the compactness of clay with a thickness of 30cm. Strong self-retaining water performance.

2. Permanent waterproof performance: Because sodium bentonite is a natural inorganic material, it will not age or corrode even after a long time or the surrounding environment changes, so the waterproof performance is long-lasting.

3. Easy construction and short construction period: Compared with other waterproof materials, the construction is relatively simple and does not require heating and pasting. Simply use bentonite powder and nails, washers, etc. to connect and secure. No special inspection is required after construction, and it is easy to repair if waterproofing defects are found. GCL has the shortest construction period among existing waterproof materials.

4. Not affected by temperature: it will not break brittlely in cold climate conditions.

5. Integration of waterproof materials and objects: When sodium bentonite reacts with water, it has an expansion capacity of 13-16 times. Even if the concrete structure vibrates and settles, the bentonite in GCL can repair cracks on the concrete surface within 2mm.
